I’ve been a good sleeper most my life until I began having neck and upper back trouble. Chiropractic work, massage, and stretching only go so far and waking up in agony wasn’t going to cut it. 1. It All Starts With The Best Mattress!


Mattresses have come a long way and while they can be the priciest part of a bed, they are the most important element of a great night’s sleep. It is wise to choose a mattress that will keep your spine and hips aligned and you want a mattress that lasts. I mean seriously, you’re spending quite a bit on a good bed, may as well get your use out of it!

Investing in a great mattress is investing in yourself.

Purchase a pillow or two that are “just right” for you. Personally, my husband and I have a big range of pillows we use each night from neck support, between legs and hugged to the body and it’s taken a few years to get them right.

3. The right sheets for you

Get sheets that feel the best against your skin TO YOU. Not what others say or advertisers say are best. Feel the difference between cotton, satin, and flannel. My favorite is a lightweight, soft cotton, at least 400 thread count sheet. I love them clean and crisp and prefer to bleach for the cleanest and most hotel-like experience.

It is advised to put atop you a HEAVY blanket. It acts as a decompressor to weigh your body down and scientifically proven to enduce sleep. There are many to choose from. I personally use a heavy fleece blanket and a quilt from my younger years. I also enjoy a down-alternative once in awhile. My husband sleeps warm so doesn’t like a lot blankets. 5. Lastly, correct lighting

You don’t want too harsh overhead lights. Put a small lamp, either stand alone or on a side table or nightstand next to your bed. The lighting should be serene and soft. Find something that fits with your aesthetic or try something new. Either way, put something next to bed that quietly guides you to your sleep space and can easily be turned off when you close your eyes.

 

Let me also offer you this:

If you insist on having your phone next to you, I strongly recommend turning the device face down and on silent. If you need an alarm as most folks including me do, purchase one separately. You can find many with additional features like white noise, quiet music, healing sounds, colored night lights etc. that you can set as to help you fall asleep faster.

Establishing a nighttime routine will also ensure you have the best chance at getting “good” sleep. Here is a great article I like with great ideas to help encourage a good nights sleep.

The temperature in the room will aslo make a difference in comfort. Ideally a room should be somewhere between 60 and 67 degrees for optimal comfort. Better yet, if light and noise are no issue, open a window to let fresh air in and cool the room down naturally.
